Mornin', Bracket Breath!
How ya doing this morning? If you're like most people,
you're probably regretting a few picks, maybe proud of a few others, but
generally feeling ok. Me, I'm wondering why my bracket reminds me of
Charlie Sheen -- everyone acknowledges that it's a train wreck, some pity it,
some are mad at it, but mostly I'm just sick of looking at it.
But that's just me (really, he went
to the Charlie Sheen references this early? It's going to be a long
tournament).
The big news this morning -- and I couldn't make this up -- is
that last year's winner (Nagalicious) is also this year's first-round leader,
after correctly picking 15 of yesterday's 16 games. Nagalicious stands alone at
15, followed by four players -- BLT Warrior, Brynnie, Shay Goodell, and The
Reverend -- at 14.
But like I say every year, don't get your knickers in a twist
over first round performances. The games are worth one point, and you really
don't start scoring the big points until the later rounds (kind of like Marky
Mark in The Fighter).
The big first-round upsets were Louisville dropping out of the
fun to Morehead State (was that school started by Endora from Bewitched? -- I
know, different spelling), and Richmond beating Vanderbilt. I suppose if you
look at the seeds, Gonzaga over St. John's is an upset, but the Zags lost their
underdog status years ago.
Today brings 16 more contests, and
then we're down to 32 teams fighting for the whole shebang. Happy hoops to
you all, and from the bottom of my heart, Go Hampton! Big fan.
