Sweet 16 Day 1 Update

Good Morning, Hoop Playas:

Three great games on Thursday night (and one blowout), and lots of movement in the standings of “Jabin’s March Madness Charity Pool.” When the dust cleared, we had two players tied for the lead in the pool – Beavis and The Reverend top the standings at 57 points. JonStein1 and DeaconForever are 1 back at 56, and then six players – Aunt Holly, Recedinghairliners, Laughing Jay, Tenacious D, Buddy Ryan, and Going west are two back at 55. Four more great matchups on tap for Friday night, so lots of movin’ and shakin’ still ahead. Head to the site for complete standings midway through the Sweet 16.

Thursday night featured losses by a 1 seed and two 2 seeds, as things are getting wild!  We lost top-seeded North Carolina and 2 seed Arizona out west, and No. 2 seed Iowa State in the East bracket.

UCONN not stop them

The Connecticut Huskies continued to lay waste to their opponents in this tournament. Thursday night featured a rematch of last year’s national championship game, but it was never really close. UConn hung 30 on a good San Diego State team, and even Danny Hurley’s son got in the game at the end. Again, not making any predictions here, but who is going to stop them? They’ve won their three tournament games so far by an average margin of 29 points – yikes!

Tar Heels fall

We lost our first No. 1 seed on Thursday night, as North Carolina fell to Alabama in the Sweet 16, the first blemish on the ACC’s record in this tournament (I don’t acknowledge “play-ins” as part of the tournament, so the Virginia offensive monstrosity in the play-in doesn’t count).

Fear the Tiger

A school better known for its recent football success plays basketball, too, and Clemson made its first Elite 8 since 1980 (yes, 44 years ago) with a stunning upset of 2-seed Arizona. The ACC’s football school wins, and a bluebood basketball school loses. That’s why they call it March Madness.

Commercials

Rather than making fun of commercials, we’re going to change things up with a little quiz. I’m fascinated by voice actors, and I play a little game to try to identify the celebrity voiceovers in commercials. So here’s the quiz (answers at the bottom of the Email – scroll down, but no cheating!)

Who are the voice actors in the following commercials?

  1. Buffalo Wild Wings (Box Out!)

  2. GMC trucks

  3. The two pigeons in the DirectTV spot

OK, that’s it for the first day of the Sweet 16.  I’ll be back to you Friday night after we ourselves an Elite 8!

Yours in hoops,
