It's over! -- Beavis takes the title!
Villanova won its second national championship in three years tonight with a convincing 79-62 victory over Michigan, giving Philadelphia its second title in a couple of months (we're still not over the Eagles winning the Super Bowl).
In the process, Beavis completed an unbelievable comeback to take the title in Jabin's March Madness Charity Pool. Picking a perfect Final Four (Michigan and Villanova victories in the semifinals, and Villanova in the championship game), Beavis came from nowhere to win the title with 75 points.
Three players -- Goose, Hang on Sloopy, and Powerspeed -- finished tied for second with 72 points, followed by Serenity Now! and KathyN at 71, and Marshall for Nova at 70 (although something tells me he's happy tonight anyway). Goose, who won the title two years in a row a few years back, also had a late surge by picking a perfect Final Four.
As I say every year, the early-round games (worth 1 and 2 points) are certainly important, but Beavis proved that scoring those 5 and 6 points late are really the key to winning this thing.
I'll have more on the winning charity later in the week, but as usual I'll wait a week or so to make the donation, giving you good people one last chance to add to the pot. If you are feeling generous, head on over to the GoFundMe Page to chip in. And I can't thank you enough for your support, especially those of you who go above and beyond (you know who you are!).
Villanova opening satellite campus in Texas
The Wildcats sure do like the the Lone Star State. Two years ago in Houston, in a much more dramatic finish, Kris Jenkins hit an unbelievable shot at the buzzer to beat North Carolina and give Villanova its first title since 1985. Just two years later and 200 miles to the west, the Wildcats defeated Michigan in San Antonio (home of Charles Barkley's favorite tourist site, the Ala-Mode).
Just like in the pool, the "Worst Commercial of March Madness" wasn't settled until the end, and it was a late charge. I was all set to give the prize to the Bud Light "Dilly Dilly" spot (enough already!), until the late entry from Apple Pay came in and ... well, what's the opposite of stole my heart? I think I'm not the target demo, but I find that Michael Jackson-wannabe-paying-for-things-with-a-glance commercial completely annoying. Never thought I'd be craving more "Dilly Dilly," but I was. Until I wasn't.
And finally, a weird travel day
So you can't make this stuff up, but I was actually in both home cities of the teams playing in the national championship game today. Villanova doesn't really count (I live there), but I travelled to Ann Arbor, MI, home of the Wolverines. So I began the day in one city hyped for a national championship, and ended the day in another.
