Three-way tie at the top as 2019 Tournament gets underway!
Good Morning, Hoop Fans!
And we’re off! Day 1 is in the books, and what a day it was. Lots of excitement, a few upsets that weren’t really upsets, and a complete logjam atop the standings of Jabin’s March Madness Charity Pool.
For the first time in a while, nobody had a perfect bracket on the first day, but we had three players with 15 out of 16. In our first round, where correct picks are worth 1 point each, three players - Ashleythedog, ChaChaRito, and Tommyo – finished the day with 15 points. Congratulations to our three leaders on a darn near perfect day of picking.
But hold the phone. Just one point back is a massive contingent of 25 players at 14 points, meaning they missed a measly two picks in a wild day of basketball.
As I say every year, nothing is decided on the first weekend, let alone the first day. So everyone is still in it.
Tune in tomorrow for the conclusion of Round 1 - when Round 1 gams are still worth 1 point each.
The Ja Morant Show
The first and second round always features mid-majors that we probably SHOULD HAVE taken notice of before, but we didn’t, because, you know, life. But Murray State absolutely dominated Marquette en route to a statement first-round victory. Murray State’s Ja Morant had a triple-double and absolutely stole the show, and Marquette goes out with a wimper losing 6 of its final 7 games. Next up for the Racers, a very tough Florida State team out of the ACC. Should be a good game Saturday.
You got corn syrup in my beer!
Quite the little dust-up going on between Bud Light and Miller Lite, isn’t it? I didn’t realize corn syrup in beer (or lack thereof) was even a thing before this year’s Super Bowl, but it has become quite the little point of contention. So Miller Lite does a nice spot showing “actors” from the Bud Light commercial drinking Miller Lite during a break, and the “Dilly Dilly” King responds. Not exactly Hatfields vs. McCoys, but it’ll do. Myself, I’m rather partial to Arnold Palmers.
By far the greatest commercials of the tournament (like every year) are the Capital One spots with Charles, Spike, and Samuel L., specifically the one with “Bracket Buddy” Larry Bird, featuring a parrot and the real Larry Bird. If they gave Oscars to basketball players starring in commercials, Larry Legend still wouldn’t get one. Reminds me of the old days, and one of my favorite “bad acting” commercials of all time (hat tip to the totally NOT fake laughter at the end).
OK, that’s all I’ve got today. Must sleep after a long day of hoops. - Talk atcha tomorrow.
